WIth Chinese New Year is just around the corner, and I’m so excited to share one of my absolute favorite foods to enjoy during the celebrations – jiaozi (Chinese dumplings)! These little guys are not just delicious; they’re packed with meaning.
Jiaozi are a symbol of prosperity and happiness, and their round shape is said to resemble ancient Chinese gold ingots. That’s right, they’re like little good luck charms, bringing wealth and fortune for the year ahead. Plus, they come in all sorts of savory fillings like pork, beef, and chicken, so there’s something for everyone!
But not only are they packed with meat but they're packed with myth too! There's this popular belief that eating jiaozi during Chinese New Year will bring you financial good fortune. The idea is tied to the shape of the dumplings, which resemble ancient gold ingots, symbolizing wealth and prosperity. So, biting into a jiaozi is like taking a little bite of luck for the year ahead!
But it gets even better – some people hide a coin inside one of the dumplings! Whoever finds the coin is said to have a year of good luck and prosperity. It’s like a tasty little fortune cookie, but even better! In ancient times, this was a fun way to wish for wealth and a bright future.
Even the ingredients hold special meaning! Take sesame oil – its golden hue symbolizes wealth and prosperity, while its rich flavor represents abundance. Oyster sauce is all about good fortune, made from oysters, a symbol of prosperity. And chili oil adds a spicy kick, symbolizing strength, courage, and vitality, helping you face the new year with boldness. Together, these ingredients bring not only great flavor but also good vibes and positive energy for a happy new year!
